Kars war bis zum 10. Jahrhundert Hauptstadt des armenischen Königreiches, 1064 eroberten es die Seldschuken. Nach einer ca. 300jährigen Zugehörigkeit zum georgischen Königreich, eroberten 1514 die Osmanen Kars und bauten es zu einer starken Festung gegen die Perser aus. Seit dem 19. Jahrhundert wurde es wiederholt von Rußland besetzt, zuletzt von 1878 bis 1920.
Sehenswert in Kars sind z.B. die Burg und die armenische Apostelkirche. Das Stadtzentrum wird immer noch von russischen Häusern aus dem 19. Jahrhundert geprägt und etwas abgelegen findet sich eine russische Kathedrale aus dieser Zeit. Empfehlenswert ist auch der Besuch in einem der türkischen Bäder.

Kars ist der ideale Ausgangspunkt für die Besichtigung des ca. 45 km entfernten Ani. In der Blütezeit soll es 100.000 Einwohner, 10.000 Häuser und 1.000 Kirchen besessen haben. 1319 zerstörte ein Erdbeben die Stadt. Auf der weitläufigen Ruinenstätte am Grenzfluß zu Armenien sind die gut erhaltenen Stadtmauern und mehrere Kirchen sehenswert.

Until the 10th century Kars was the capital of the armenian kingdom, in 1064 it had been conquered by the seljuks. After it belonged to the georgian kingdom for about 300 years the ottoman conquered Kars in 1514 and extented it to a strong fortress as protection against the persians. During the 19th century it had often been invaded by the russians the last time from 1878 to 1920.

Worth visiting in Kars are for example the castle and the armenian church. The towncentre is still influenced by russian houses from the 19th century and further apart from the centre you can find a russian cathedral of this time. A visit in one of the turkish baths is advisable as well.

Kars is an ideal starting point for a visit to Ani which is about 45 km away. In its flourishing times it had 100.0000 inhabitants, 10.000 houses and 1.000 churches. In 1319 an earthquake destroyed the town. In the widespread ruins alongside the borderriver to Armenia you can still see the town walls and some churches.
